How Lachit Borphukan Defeated Mughals ?

Introduction 

We know the stories of maharana pratap and chatrapathhi shivaji maharaj  who defeated mughals fearlessly 

But we never heard story of that unsung  hero who defeated 1000’s of mughal soldiers with  having  very small army , 

After defeat mughals dint  even  dare to touch that region again , he not just destroyed the expansion of mughals but also he destroyed the dreams of aurangzeb  but saddest thing is our history books never teach about him 

Yes I was talking about lachit borphukan the unsung hero of ahom kingdom 

But question pops in  everyones mind is   
Who is lachit  borphukan ? 
How did he saved ahom kingdom from mughals ?

•  Lets start from the time of aurangzeb when he  was ruling bharat ,by destroying temples , converting hindus  to islam  and  killing innocent people , 

• One side chatrapati shivaji maharaj was destroying mughals in deccan  region and other side  north east region of assam was facing  mughals fearlessly 

• It was 13th century when people of ahom came from myanmar and accepted the culture and  sanatan dharam and won small kingdoms and built their own empire 

• Even tho king was head of kingdom , there were 5 ministers who has all the power to dethrone the king if king does not rule the kingdom properly 

• At the time koch bihari are the only enemies and koch bihari were attacking ahom kingdom  because koch bihari had the support of mughals 

• From decades mughals were waiting to capture river brahmaputra and assam region ,thats were the fight between ahoms and mughals started 

• It was 1648 when  raja   jayadhwaja  singha become king of ahom kingdom and recaptured lost region of assam and also he captured few parts of mughal empire

•  But within few years jayadhwaja lost battle to mughals and promised to give 80 elephants , many horses  , money and also he gave his own daughter to mughals 

• Within few days jayadhwaja  singha died with  pain and insult from mughals  and After him  chakradhwaj singha becomes the new king and cancels all the deals between ahom’s and mughals and attacked the forts captured by mughals 

• And  chakradhwaj singha  appoints  lachit as the superintendent of the royal guards and later lachit was promoted as ‘borphukan’ 

• The position of borphukan  is one of the top five ministries  in the ahom kingdom,  In august 1667, chakradhvaj singha appoints  lachit borphukan as the commander-in-chief of ahom kingdom.And  immediately, lachit started war  against  mughals and recaptured guwahati fort 

• After guwahati lachit borphukan was eyeing to capture itakhuli , there was thousands of standing mughal army , 100’s of cannons and many  elephants and horses  so capturing itakhuli was not that easy 

• It was  night time ,when  small group of  army wage war by crossing rivers and destroyed cannons and returned back safely ,before the sunrise , the army led by  lachit borphukan attacked  fort and captured fort easily ,

• By this aurangzeb was so much worried and to  defeat lachit borphukan and his army, Aurangzeb appoints raja ram singh to defeat ahoms and he  recaptures rangamati fort with  71,000 strong mughal army  which includes  elephants , horses ,gunners , archers and also cannons  

• In ongoing war lachit borphukan was fearlessly facing attacks of mughals with a few thousand soldiers

• One side lachit borphukan sent his general of army chief for peace talks with mughals and other side he was fighting mughals in forest by sending small groups of his army

• But with huge army , mughals were  defeating each and every fort and reached till the river of brahmaputra    

• By now lachit borphukan understands that defeating mughals in land is difficult and he changes war strategies and decides to fight in river water ,but saddest thing is lachit borphukan Fall sick during battle  

• Without commander soldiers starts to back off the battle ground and mughals have  become strong again ,by knowing this , to support his troops lachit borphukan again comes to battle even after  seriously illness 

• While ahom soldiers were running back by seeing  mughal army , lachit borphukan to motivate his troops, he  tells everyone that “ go and tell king that lachit borphukan gave his life for the kingdom of ahom ,and also  tell your wifes that lachit borphukan gave his blood for the people of assam “

• By listening this , ahom soldiers stopped going back and supported lachit borphukan,

•  With new war strategy lachit borphukan destroys mughal boats and in battle more than 4000 mughals and their  commander munawar khan loses life and river was filled with destroyed boats and dead bodies of mughals 

• In history this battle is known as saraighat battle,in those days defeating mughals was not a small thing, from 1615 to 1682 they faced mughals fearlessly without taking backstep 

• After losing war in 1671 raja ram singh  returns to delhi and within one year  lachit borphukan will die of illness

• After few years of lachit borphukan death , mughals again recaptures gawathi fort and after facing 18 big battles , burma captures ahom in 18th century  and later east india company capture’s assam from burma 

• With different kind of war strategies and bravery  lachit borphukan was called shivaji of assam , To mark his bravery  assamese will celebrate  lachit divas on  every year of 24 november  

• In case if ahomeis failed to face mughals then today the culture and tradition of assam would have been  completely vanished
